Integrating Job Parallelism in Real-Time Scheduling Theory
We investigate the global scheduling of sporadic, implicit deadline,
real-time task systems on multiprocessor platforms. We provide a task model
which integrates job parallelism. We prove that the time-complexity of the
feasibility problem of these systems is linear relatively to the number of
(sporadic) tasks for a fixed number of processors. We propose a scheduling
algorithm theoretically optimal (i.e., preemptions and migrations neglected).
Moreover, we provide an exact feasibility utilization bound. Lastly, we propose
a technique to limit the number of migrations and preemptions
An active control concept for the TALC space telescope
Entropy, Triangulation, and Point Location in Planar Subdivisions
A data structure is presented for point location in connected planar
subdivisions when the distribution of queries is known in advance. The data
structure has an expected query time that is within a constant factor of
optimal. More specifically, an algorithm is presented that preprocesses a
connected planar subdivision G of size n and a query distribution D to produce
a point location data structure for G. The expected number of point-line
comparisons performed by this data structure, when the queries are distributed
according to D, is H + O(H^{2/3}+1) where H=H(G,D) is a lower bound on the
expected number of point-line comparisons performed by any linear decision tree
for point location in G under the query distribution D. The preprocessing
algorithm runs in O(n log n) time and produces a data structure of size O(n).
These results are obtained by creating a Steiner triangulation of G that has
near-minimum entropy.Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures, lots of formula
Coloring and guarding arrangements,
Abstract Given an arrangement of lines in the plane, what is the minimum number c of colors required to color the lines so that no cell of the arrangement is monochromatic? In this paper we give bounds on the number c, as well as some of its variations. We cast these problems as characterizing the chromatic and the independence numbers of a new family of geometric hypergraphs
Decomposition of Multiple Coverings into More Parts
We prove that for every centrally symmetric convex polygon Q, there exists a
constant alpha such that any alpha*k-fold covering of the plane by translates
of Q can be decomposed into k coverings. This improves on a quadratic upper
bound proved by Pach and Toth (SoCG'07). The question is motivated by a sensor
network problem, in which a region has to be monitored by sensors with limited
battery lifetime
Every Large Point Set contains Many Collinear Points or an Empty Pentagon
We prove the following generalised empty pentagon theorem: for every integer
, every sufficiently large set of points in the plane contains
collinear points or an empty pentagon. As an application, we settle the
next open case of the "big line or big clique" conjecture of K\'ara, P\'or, and

Genetic Variation in the Familial Mediterranean Fever Gene (MEFV) and Risk for Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis
BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) gene (MEFV) encodes pyrin, a major regulator of the inflammasome platform controlling caspase-1 activation and IL-1beta processing. Pyrin has been shown to interact with the gene product of NLRP3, NALP3/cryopyrin, also an important active member of the inflammasome. The NLRP3 region was recently reported to be associated with Crohn's disease (CD) susceptibility. We therefore sought to evaluate MEFV as an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) susceptibility gene. METHODOLOGY AND RESULTS: MEFV colonic mucosal gene expression was significantly increased in experimental colitis mice models (TNBS p<0.0003; DSS p<0.006), in biopsies from CD (p<0.02) and severe ulcerative colitis (UC) patients (p<0.008). Comprehensive genetic screening of the MEFV region in the Belgian exploratory sample set (440 CD trios, 137 UC trios, 239 CD cases, 96 UC cases, and 107 healthy controls) identified SNPs located in the MEFV 5' haplotype block that were significantly associated with UC (rs224217; p = 0.003; A allele frequency: 56% cases, 45% controls), while no CD associations were observed. Sequencing and subsequent genotyping of variants located in this associated haplotype block identified three synonymous variants (D102D/rs224225, G138G/rs224224, A165A/rs224223) and one non-synonymous variant (R202Q/rs224222) located in MEFV exon 2 that were significantly associated with UC (rs224222: p = 0.0005; A allele frequency: 32% in cases, 23% in controls). No consistent associations were observed in additional Canadian (256 CD trios, 91 UC trios) and Scottish (495 UC, 370 controls) sample sets. We note that rs224222 showed marginal association (p = 0.012; G allele frequency: 82% in cases, 70% in controls) in the Canadian sample, but with a different risk allele. None of the NLRP3 common variants were associated with UC in the Belgian-Canadian UC samples and no significant interactions were observed between NLRP3 and MEFV that could explain the observed flip-flop of the rs224222 risk allele. CONCLUSION: The differences in association levels observed between the sample sets may be a consequence of distinct founder effects or of the relative small sample size of the cohorts evaluated in this study. However, the results suggest that common variants in the MEFV region do not contribute to CD and UC susceptibility.Journal ArticleResearch Support, N.I.H. Photography-based taxonomy is inadequate, unnecessary, and potentially harmful for biological sciences
The question whether taxonomic descriptions naming new animal species without type specimen(s) deposited in collections should be accepted for publication by scientific journals and allowed by the Code has already been discussed in Zootaxa (Dubois & NemĂ©sio 2007; Donegan 2008, 2009; NemĂ©sio 2009aâb; Dubois 2009; Gentile & Snell 2009; Minelli 2009; Cianferoni & Bartolozzi 2016; Amorim et al. 2016). This question was again raised in a letter supported
by 35 signatories published in the journal Nature (Pape et al. 2016) on 15 September 2016. On 25 September 2016, the following rebuttal (strictly limited to 300 words as per the editorial rules of Nature) was submitted to Nature, which on
18 October 2016 refused to publish it. As we think this problem is a very important one for zoological taxonomy, this text is published here exactly as submitted to Nature, followed by the list of the 493 taxonomists and collection-based
researchers who signed it in the short time span from 20 September to 6 October 2016
